WHAT ARE THERAPY DOGS?

THERAPY & SERVICE DOGS - WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
Therapy and service dogs both go through extensive training, but their roles are quite different. Therapy dogs focus on bringing comfort and companionship, often visiting hospitals, schools, and senior homes to brighten people’s days. They provide emotional support in settings like rehabilitation sessions, but they are not trained to perform specialized tasks like service dogs are.

- 4-week Obedience Training
- 2-week Public Access Training
- Included with this program is a therapy dog vest with patches, a leather leash, a Dogtra e-collar, and unlimited follow-up lessons at our facility.
GETTING A NEW YORK THERAPY DOG CERTIFICATION
Foundation: Obedience Training
Our therapy dog training in New York is somewhat similar to our service dog training in that our approach for therapy dogs begins with our 4-week obedience program. This is where the language that you will use to communicate with your dog is taught to them. This program is the foundation for every service and therapy dog we train.
Tailored Public Access Training
Then, depending on what your therapy dog is going to be doing (for example, working in a school, nursing home, making visits to hospitals, going to work with you as a counselor or therapist at your practice), we will begin training tailored to the job they will be doing. Public access training for prospective New York therapy dogs lasts 2 weeks.
Testing for Therapy Dog Certification
With all of our therapy dog programs, you and your dog will complete the CGC test at our facility and be given a certificate showing that they have completed a therapy dog program.
